What opportunities do
students have after completing an online degree in India?
The value
of the programmes themselves are absolutely tremendous for people considering
an academic career and especially for those in science, technology,
engineering, maths and social science. It could take as little as two years to
obtain a BS (Bachelor of Science), MS or PhD in a subject of your choice. And
once you have finished, the cost of your degree is typically a fraction of what
it would cost in any other western country. This will be important because, as
time goes on, India’s population is growing at a phenomenal rate, and the
demand for tertiary education will only increase. There will, therefore, be a
growing need for trained personnel to meet the needs of an increasingly
literate and technologically-driven population.
Newly
established undergraduate schools within universities offer, and will continue
to offer, some of the courses and programmes that are normally associated with
American universities. There are also several master’s programmes available for
research at a very reasonable cost. I would expect that in the future more
universities in India will establish programmes in very popular subject areas
such as business administration, healthcare, engineering and medicine. It is
worth noting that many of these institutions also offer ‘non-traditional’
international programmes that are normally considered difficult or even
impossible in most western countries.
A new BA
degree in India seems to me to offer graduates the opportunity to learn about
the world and develop both analytical and critical
thinking skills that are necessary in a highly diverse and fast-changing
society. It is also potentially a stepping stone to earning a post-graduate
degree and moving into further study in the United States or the United
Kingdom.

The crowd
had trickled in from the world outside the Lake Merritt BART station when the
doors opened at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Some
braved the sun in leather and denim. Others pressed themselves against the side
of a glass wall for shade.
Inside,
the smell of perfume and cologne reached them all, the speakers began their
carpool-jams playlist, and they lined up.
The first
case of the morning was Noelle, 36, who came to court after being summoned by a
private investigator who suspected her ex-husband of being responsible for her
best friend’s murder.
The woman
was killed in her San Jose apartment in June 2015. At the time, she had been
dating the man for several years. She had told Noelle’s friends she was happy.
But Noelle had been suspicious about the relationship and kept her distance.
The
private investigator wanted to meet her, Noelle explained, and the man was the
person who drove them there.
During
the conversation, the private investigator said he knew he couldn’t prosecute
the man. Instead, he had come to court to issue her a summons to give evidence
against him.
Noelle’s
ex-husband was arrested in March in connection with the murder. The private
investigator was stunned. “If I had to pay to find the person who murdered
my best friend, I would make the most of it,” Noelle said. “I’ll do
anything I can to make sure he gets what he deserves.”
Inside
the courtroom, Noelle filled out a questionnaire and then took a seat. Her
ex-husband was sitting next to her, on the opposite side of the table.
“We’re
at a criminal court, so everyone has to sit in their assigned seats,” said
Judge Aaryn O’Brien, who was running the court. “So if you have any
questions, please don’t interrupt me.”
A court
bailiff directed everyone to take off their shoes. For most, this was the first
time in months that they had seen the inside of a courtroom.
O’Brien
was running the court that day as part of a pilot project. The Courthouse
Courts at 600 Webster St. is meant to be a “courts-by-mail” court,
serving people who live within walking distance of the building.
“The
idea is to start with this (nearby) area and grow outward,” said County
Supervisor Keith Carson, who is also chair of the Courthouse Courts
subcommittee.
The pilot
program, he added, is intended to help alleviate pressure on the overloaded
Superior Court of Alameda County. “People can come to these courthouses at
any time and get help,” he said. “They can get electronic case
management, and they can get help in solving some of the crimes that are
occurring in the East Bay.”
For a
small fee, the court also will provide various services for the people who come
to court, such as criminal case management, public safety, mental health
treatment, dispute resolution and family reunification. The fees range from $40
to $150 a month.
The idea
of the Courthouse Courts program came from the library system’s non-emergency
law help line. While it was in beta testing, the program won a $200,000 state
grant.
Is an online degree valid in India?
No.
Online degree programs are not recognized as either accredited or approved by
the UGC or state boards. Most importantly, you won’t be able to take the
qualifying test to become a recognized engineer or pharmacist from an online
degree.
The thing
is, unlike conventional universities, online colleges aren’t required to hire
professors to teach, or even hire advisors. Online degrees also tend to have
less in the way of academic requirements. For instance, in 2017, Edx, an online
university specializing in degrees in science, technology, engineering and math
(STEM) awarded nearly 150,000 degrees. Less than 8,000 were earned at
traditional universities. Even so, the process of online degrees is still
evolving, and so is the way employers assess online education.
However,
the lack of restrictions doesn’t mean you should expect online degrees to offer
the same quality as traditional degrees. They’re typically designed to fit a
certain curriculum, but they lack the hands-on training that comes with a
traditional university degree.
Pros and
cons of taking an online degree
Some of
the biggest benefits of a traditional degree over an online one include the
fact that you’re going to spend much less time in school. Traditional universities
have professors, classes and campus life to occupy your time. On the flip side,
online degrees tend to be flexible and convenient for those who have to work or
have other commitments outside of school.
However,
there are some serious drawbacks that come with getting an online degree.
Some
online degrees, like those offered by Kaplan, have online or hybrid classrooms.
This means that they incorporate the convenience of online learning with the
rigor of classroom learning. However, a hybrid classroom, which Kaplan’s online
program is, means that some classes are taught by on-campus professors, but
many are taught by teachers who are based online.
It’s
important to consider the size of your course load when you’re considering
whether an online degree is right for you. Generally, it’s best to get a
six-to-nine-credit class per semester. However, courses that are offered on
traditional campuses may run more than one semester, meaning that if you miss
one or two classes, you may not be able to make up for it.
Types of
online degrees :-
There are
more than a dozen different types of online degrees. Some programs require you
to live at a college campus while others require you to log in from your own
home.
·
Technical degrees –
Some online degree programs are geared towards
careers in science, technology , engineering and math (STEM). These degrees
will require you to build things using
math and computer science skills. For example, if you want a program in
engineering or engineering technology, then you’ll need to obtain a degree in
computer science in order to complete it.
A
technical degree typically requires that you spend a significant amount of time
in the classroom building circuits and robots in order to demonstrate how
you’ll use your math and science skills to be successful in the workplace.
If you
have an interest in programming, engineering or math fields, then a technical
degree may be the right fit for you.
Curricular
requirements vary, but technical degrees generally require that you complete a
certain amount of courses. For example, a three-credit course in computer
science will result in a technical degree from Virginia Tech. In contrast, a
four-credit course in liberal arts from Wayne State University requires that
you complete only two courses.
You can
learn more about the curriculum requirements and the specific course(s) that
might interest you at the Michigan State University website.
·
Graduate degrees –
Online
master’s and doctoral programs allow you to earn a master’s degree in just a
few years by enrolling in a compressed, on-campus program.
As with
technical degrees, the flexibility and convenience of online degrees makes them
a great fit for individuals interested in pursuing graduate degrees. Some
programs are offered online while others require you to attend a school on
campus.
Most
master’s degree programs allow you to complete a course load of up to six
classes per semester. Some allow you to take six or seven courses during the
same time period.
In order
to achieve the highest-level degrees, you’ll likely need to graduate with a
significant number of credits. While you’ll generally need more than 120
credits to earn a master’s degree, some programs require that you earn more
than 300 credits.
If you
have the time to dedicate to your studies, you can complete most of a doctoral
program within four years. However, if you’re interested in pursuing a doctoral
program, it’s worth considering whether it’s a good fit for you and whether you
have the time to dedicate to the program.
·
Employment possibilities –
Ultimately,
what makes a degree in an online program stand out from its traditional peers
is how well it helps you prepare for the workforce. According to the National
Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 50 percent of students who took online
classes ended up earning a bachelor’s degree. Of these, 42 percent had less
than a bachelor’s degree or no degree at all.
Those who graduated from
college with a bachelor’s degree were almost twice as likely to be employed as
those who didn’t complete college. The average full-time student who earned a
bachelor’s degree earned $1,454,514 during the first five years after college.
The average person who earned a bachelor’s degree but didn’t complete college
earned $2,
