Two words: Llamas. Fortnite: Battle Royale was the breakout game of 2017 and continues to grow in popularity as Epic Games works to add more content. It is now by far the most popular game on the PC, which makes it the one to beat. If you’re interested in a less mobile experience, consider playing Fortnite’s sister title, Save the World, which is basically a co-op game.

2. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – approx. 4,300 players per game

PUBG (aka “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds”) is by far the most popular battle royale game on mobile devices. It’s also available on Xbox One and PC, but PC is still the most popular way to play. With high PC specs and a competitive community, it’s the most accessible experience if you want to play with friends.

3. H1Z1: King of the Kill – approx. 3,700 players per game

H1Z1, now owned by King, was once one of the most popular battle royale games, but has now been replaced by Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. If you’re looking to try the game out without dropping $10 on in-app purchases, you can download H1Z1: King of the Kill for free.

4. Battlegrounds – approx. 2,800 players per game

With nearly 5 million copies sold, Battlegrounds is easily the biggest battle royale game out there. But it’s still in beta, so it might be worth waiting to download until you’ve gotten more of the bugs out of the game.

5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 approx. 1,500 players per game

Call of Duty is a pretty intimidating game to jump into on a phone, but Black Ops 4 makes things a little easier by stripping it down to a single player experience. While it still has a lot of gunplay and tactical elements, this is the game for you if you want a more traditional battle royale experience. Even though it’s free, if you’re looking for a pure shooter experience, Battlegrounds is not the best choice.

5. ARMS – approx. 2,500 players per game

The first Nintendo Switch game to arrive, ARMS doesn’t have a huge player base, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fun, unique and family-friendly experience. It’s available as a free download in the Nintendo eShop.

Top 3 battle royale games

It seems that with every major new release that is popular, there’s a new hot battle royale game that releases. We’ve seen PUBG and Fortnite battle it out in the market over the past few years, and recently players are exploring the less popular side of the genre with lesser-known titles like Realm Royale, Battlegrounds, and even Mirror’s Edge Catalyst.

So which battle royale game is best? Is it worth playing if you’ve got the time? Well, it turns out that they are all good in their own right, but some are better than others.

Battle Royale Game Rankings

As the dominant genre in gaming, there are so many great battle royale games that are worthy of your time, money, and hours of playtime. In the spirit of making the best possible list, we’ve ranked all the battle royale games in order to answer the all-important question: which game is best?

Whether you want an intense shooter to test your skills or an exciting cooperative game where you team up with friends to take down thousands of other players in a last ditch attempt at survival, there’s a Battle Royale game for you.

1. Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG)

This game is by far the most popular battle royale game in existence. As of October 2017, the game has more than 50 million monthly active players and over a billion downloads. PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene has proved that creating a successful competitive multiplayer game is an entirely different beast.

The game features a realistic setting where you are dropped onto a desert island that you have to scavenge for resources to survive and build a shelter. The game is playable on both PC and Xbox One, and there is also a mobile version, Battlegrounds Mobile.

2. Fortnite

Though the game is free, Epic Games makes a whole lot of money from the game. Fortnite is still available to play for free, but you can also buy in-game items in order to improve your experience and to make your experience more fun.

Over 2 million monthly active players play Fortnite. Along with creating a beautiful location with colorful outfits, weapons, and gear, Fortnite does have a cooperative mode where you can team up with your friends and experience the game with a more competitive angle.

3. Faeria

There are a lot of exciting video games coming out of South Korea, and one of the most popular in the industry is Faeria. The game has a similar fantasy setting to other popular games such as Hearthstone and card games such as Magic: The Gathering.

The game features a cooperative battle with four players to take down an evil wizard. The cooperative mode also contains over 4,000 cards that you can use to strengthen your characters and help them to be even more powerful than the others.

4. PUBG Mobile

In the battle royale genre, PUBG Mobile has to be on the list because it is the mobile version of the PC title. Currently, the game is only available on iOS, but as the game grows in popularity, it will be expanding to Android.

As the mobile version of the game, PUBG Mobile is still very well made and is the most polished version of the game available on the App Store. There is also a lot of extra content with in-game challenges and loot boxes that can be purchased.

5. Mirage: Arcane Warfare

Mirage: Arcane Warfare is a cooperative, team-based game that features great graphics for the console platform. You’ll be dropping into a fantasy world where you will need to work together with your friends to survive and reach your goal.

6. Tera

Another game that is coming out for mobile platforms is Tera. Tera is a game that was created as a spiritual successor to the popular Diablo series. The game features a beautiful art style, fantastic graphics, and a tactical battle royale.

7. Crisis Wars

Crisis Wars is a top-down shooter that features a cooperative campaign mode where you will go to battle against hordes of monsters and other players. The game is available on the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

8. Unkown: The Land Beyond

This is an indie title from South Korea, and has the potential to be a very interesting game with a very unique and varied plot. You start the game with nothing, and you will have to complete quests in order to get supplies to survive.

As the game progresses, it will keep you on your toes as you will have to fight to survive, and find the secrets of the mysterious world that you are exploring.

9. Lawbreakers

Lawbreakers is an awesome game, and the first non-Battle Royale game on this list. You will join a group of adrenaline-junkie gamers, and can play as one of over 30 different classes in this multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA).

You will also be able to play with up to 4 other players to compete for first place. The game is available on PS4, PC, and Xbox One, and there is even a Lawbreakers Esports League.

10. The Long Dark

The Long Dark is a very different game from the majority of the ones on this list, because it is only available for the PC. The game is played on a 2D map, and you can use a game map to explore and discover new areas in the game.

You will be able to explore the barren Canadian wilderness as you seek out food, shelter, and resources. The gameplay is quick and simple, and you can even build a fire in the game, although it is not that easy to start the fire.
